Mail Inbox opens on the oldest messages

After upgrading to Sierra, my Mac Mail Inbox opens with the slider showing the oldest messages, so I have to slide down manually to the most recent messages every time. No other Mail folder behaves like this, and none did before Sierra either. Anyone?

Thanks, Nick :-) I have now spoke to AppleCare, who promised to escalate the issue to senior level. I will give them a couple of weeks to deal with this before calling back.

But I have also found out how to handle the annoying problem until (if ever) the bug is updated. If you open Mail and find yourself in the opposite end (the top) of where you want to be (the bottom), just click the up arrow. That will take you to the second latest e-mail, and the window scrolls down automatically. OK, still one extra click, but far better than to have to grab the scrollbar and drag it.

Full marks for persistency peo bjorn; I think you described the problem perfectly in the first place!

I have exactly the same issue and have only just found this thread, having been getting more and more annoyed with having to grab the scroll bar and drag it down every time I open Mail. A small thing, but very annoying!

This must be a bug - as you say it never happened before Sierra. Hopefully it will get fixed but I doubt it is a priority.

I have the same frustrating problem where I can change the sort-order in the list of mail, but this does not change the sort-order of of messages in the reading pane. It does not make sense to put the oldest, and presumably already read, message at the top and then have to scroll down to the bottom to read the newest, unread, message. To me, this is not user friendly at all. But then again, Mail no longer seem to be of any priority for Apple. It needs a total overhaul and update.

I have the same issue, as does my husband. It seems like it always, when i go to mail, opens in a random email-and it will open with this for many months, and one has to scroll to the top to see the new emails. It’s is frustrating and shouldn’t happen. Even when I highlight the latest email, it will reopen at this other email way down my list. Please fix this.

As you were discussing with community specialist Chris _ g1 a screen shot of it :

User uploaded file

You mean to say scroll bar is on left hand side of column , but generally it on right hand side , if there are hundred's of mail ( just an example ) you have to scroll down to find the message that is time taking job to search .

I tried and gave a solution If you choose click on A to Z the mails will be shown as starting from 1 to 100 , it means newest mail will be on top - no 1 and 100 th mail will be on last .

And , if you reverse the settings as Z to A it means 100 th mail or last mail will be shown on top and 1st mail will be shown last ( on the bottom end ) .

So , for convenience you can set A to Z or vice versa .

And also , are you concerned about the scroll bar . if yes it is a normal behavior , we have to scroll up and down .

Thanks !

Hello peo björn,

Thanks for asking about mail after the upgrade of Sierra here in the Apple Support Communities. I'm happy to help change that sort option with it opening with the oldest messages.

With Mail open, and the word Mail up top next to the Apple, move to the right third option in from the word Mail, and click View > Sort By, then choose Date. You will have to do this one more time, but then select Newest Message on Top. If this is how it is selected currently, please change it to another option, and then change it back to these settings.

Thanks again for checking out the Apple Support Communities. Enjoy macOS Sierra!

Thanks for you quick reply! But I'm afraid I did not state the problem clearly enough (had the feeling while writing but that was the best I could do in English). I'll make a new try: The problem is not sorting by date with the oldest message on top. The problem is that Mail opens the Inbox view with the scroll bar at the oldest, i.e. at the opposite end of my looong list of messages in my Inbox. So in order to see the new messages I have to manually scroll from the very top all the way to the bottom. Every single time I open Mail. So irritating. As I wrote, none of the other folders behaves like this, and neither did Inbox before I upgraded to Sierra.

I have the same problem, and will attempt to make this clearer.

We can sort our mailbox and the sort order is not an issue. We can sort by date and have newest at the top of the list or the bottom of the list, this is all easy and continues to work as before.

With the Sierra upgrade when we click between mail boxes that are set to view by date the mailbox opens and displays the oldest message (at either the top or the bottom of the list depending on the sort order) unless a message is already selected. If I had a piece of mail selected (highlighted) in this mail box and move between mail boxes I will return to the selected mail. If however while I am looking at another mail box and select a piece of mail there, when I go back to the inbox (or whatever mail box) I am back at the oldest message.

What I want (and I expect most people want) is to be able to see the newest content, in order to do this I have to use the scroll bar and go to the far end of the the contents of my mailbox to get to the newest content. The fact that no message is selected when I click on the mail box should not take me to the oldest message.

So how can I open a mailbox sorted by date with no message already selected (or with a message selected in another mail box), and see the newest content without having to scroll the other end of my mailbox?

This seemed to work for me but I don't know why. I highlightled the most recent unread message in Inbox, then switched to Deleted Messages. I highlightled a message, then quit Mail. I restarted Mail and it started at the message that I had highlighted in Deleted Message. I switched to Inbox and it showed the last unread message highlighte. I quit mail again and when I restarted it still had the last unread message highlightled.

Hope this helps!

I cannot reproduce the problem people are describing.

I can switch to and from any mailboxes and it always returns to whatever message it was before. So if it was at the bottom, it stays at the bottom; that is also the case even if I quit and restart Mail.

I have no idea why for some people the inbox is behaving differently, but it is not happening everywhere.

It is not the list of e-mail that is the problem. It is if there is a sting of messages and in the reading pane to the right of the e-mail list where my issue is. The oldest message in the string is at the top and the latest at the bottom. Again, it is the display order in the reading pane (where I read each message content) on the right side that I cannot find out how to change so the newest is always at the top.
